If I was to mention the island of Puna to you I wonder if you would know where it is? Well it is part of Ecuador and at one time the only people that lived there was aboriginal people. Nowadays the local population is comprised of children, but very poor children with no shoes to wear and with very little by way of medication to take care of them when they fall ill, which they often do because of the many flies which carry diseases.
For many years God was not known in this community. When children are taught to drink alcohol, and use and sell drugs, they conform to the ways of the world, learning lifestyles far from Biblical teachings. Our director adds, Couples do not respect marriage or see it as a means to unite their families. These families continually struggle with loyalty to one another.
Then along came a pastor by the name of David who had a vision to see change taking place in this community. He received training from the Bible league and now has a strong sense of compassion for the people of the Island. He longed to see light breaking into the darkness which was surrounding the area.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.(Psalm 112:4 NIV)
Pastor David's task of course was not an easy one because the people knew nothing about God's Word. Although it did not happen straight away, very soon God's Word began to take effect on the people and David's vision started to become a reality. At first the seeds of God's Word were implanted in people's lives and the seeds gradually began to grow. Pastor David is still working there encouraging local people to work together in the service of Christ
Many children, once slaves to alcohol and drugs, now study Gods Word! The community now experiences physical and spiritual cleanliness. Families are becoming members of churches and experiencing the joy of Christian fellowship for the very first time! Men and women are discovering Gods ordained purpose for marriage, creating unity and loyalty in the home.
Has the sowing of God's Word resulted in anything happening? Yes indeed it has, as four churches have now been planted and a further six are in the pipeline, and Jesus Christ is being made known throughout the island - 15615
